Overview of VOIP, Internet Phones and it's Advantages

bullet_green.gifWhat is VoIP?

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. As the term suggests VoIP transmits voice data through IP packets and, ultimately through the Internet. VoIP can use accelerating hardware to achieve this purpose and can also be used in a PC environment.

bullet_green.gifWhat are the advantages using VoIP rather than PSTN?

When you are using a PSTN line, you typically pay for the time used to a PSTN telephone company (BT): the more time you stay on the phone the more you'll pay. In addition you couldn't talk with more that one person at a time.

VoIP allows you to talk all the time with any person you want (providing the other person is also connected to Internet at the same time), to any geographic worldwide location (money independent) and in addition, you can talk with multiple people at the same time.

With a VOIP PBX installed in your home or office you can roam from home to office and worldwide with the same DDI or telephone number not bound by your ISDN or PSTN location.

To combine the flexibilty of VOIP systems but the reliability of PSTN and ISDN you can combine them, allowing you to use your existing ISDN interface with the VOIP PBX. This allows phones to be anywhere in the world on an extension or DDI connected to your telephone system.
